Stepping between the time of ingenue and the silvery-haired later years of womanhood, Lora Kelley is an artist that presses into the gentle magic of middle-life.
The Texas to Virginia transplant, writes and sings from her own experiences, drawing from a rich heritage of generational stories about domesticity, the tucked away spaces of mothering and the ferocity required to be a woman in this world.
Her lyrics enjoy illuminating the taken-for-granted necessities that bring flourishing to human bodies and relationships. Kelley has created two EPs of original music, with her 2018 self-titled EP establishing Lora as a 2018 Americana artist to watch.
Working with producer Steve Greenwell (Joss Stone), Lora developed her forthcoming first full length album moving across the lyrical and emotional landscape of nostalgic whimsy, holding on to relationships through life’s heartbreak, and sitting at the table with the nourishment of good care. Lora balances a tender eye on life’s middle age with the ache of both looking back and looking forward.
Typical for Lora’s lyrics, the listener finds her/himself in habitable spaces, moving around as if in a well-known room in one’s own house. With thoughtful acoustic guitar and gentle ambient textures, Lora’s vocals illuminate the stories with “a come sit with me and let’s trade secrets” sensibility.
Three years in the making, this album is full of both broad and decisive strokes perfectly suited for today’s accounting of both beauty and losses. Lora offers a kind voice amidst a chaotic clamor.
